I'mma Hoping for Raleigh

For nearly five months I have been commuting from Wayne County to the Raleigh area for work. I have largely enjoyed this 100 mile round trip commute because it is often quiet and full of interesting things to see.

Sunrises, sunsets; white-out fog, towering thunderheads; dilapidated barns returning to the earth, bright white farmhouses shining in the sun.

It's been a good five months, filled with lots of patio drinking and porch sitting; skin-scrubbing trips to the beach; wandering hither and yonder from Raleigh to Wilmington to Atlantic Beach.

Labor Day weekend, as I walked the Surf City beach in the middle of a thunderstorm, I felt the pull of a sea change. Look west, towards the woods, the mountains, to autumn, to the setting sun.

I've been quiet the last week as I looked for, secured, and began moving into a smallish, clean apartment on the western edge of Raleigh, just a few miles from Umstead Park and the NC Art Museum. Tuesday, after unloading a car of boxes, I took myself to the park to run the Company Mill trail, and afterwards, I unrolled a sleeping bag in my new place, drank a beer, and studied the map of this park that I intend to learn forwards and backwards.

Gratitude for small things like this makes the living good.
